While David Knight and I spent countless hours working on our latest toy for playing the river, and I knew it was coming, actually getting it built, outfitted, and in the back of my truck felt like Christmas when I was a kid. I think I had the nervous shakes on my first seal launch into the river here at Rock Island as I was so excited about putting all of the theory into practice for the first time.

My first experience with the Rock Star was alone. Nick and Dane and Clay went to run Greeter falls in the new 2011 Hero (that is another story), while Emily came to take photos and watch me try out the Rock Star M (medium).

Sitting up 1.5″ higher in the boat than I do in the All-Star (it is designed to do that) I felt up and over my boat sitting high up on the rock. I noticed that it was much easier to tip the bow down to get the boat to leave the rock, just by leaning forward. Hmmm… cool. I went for the pogo flip, but didn’t get vertical enough (I am 50/50 on that move from 20 feet up). My first strokes woke me up quick- Wow, the bow stays out better than I am used to, and backpaddle…. Stern stays out better too! 1″ shorter, same amount of rocker, but sweet!

I felt tall sitting up high and a little tippy at first and remembered that I should keep my weight over the boat and it felt stable again. The boat is .5″ wider for extra stability, which also keeps the ends out of the water better.

I couldn’t wait to get to the top wave! Emily announced that my CF card wasn’t working so no photos, just paddling it for my own pleasure…

Top wave- caught it and the stern didn’t sink at all when I backed into it. The extra 2 gallons in the stern was already working for me! Holding my breath- I went to the flatter green part of the wave to test the speed as I have about a zillion hours of experience with that wave and each boat I have paddled here at Rock Island since 1996…. ZIP, ZIP, ZOOM! Wow, FAST, FASTER! It zipped right out running way further up and to the side of the wave than I have been able to do before!

Spin…. David and I spent many a conversation discussing how to make it way looser, but also carve across when we want….. Spin, clean spin- Ball bearing feel!!! Grind sideways on the flat part of the wave???? Oh yea!!! My new favorite thing. I am still annoying Dane by saying “Watch this!” and grinding the green wave sideways and looking at him as if I just did the biggest move of all time! FUN! A boat this loose and fast is just crazy fun to surf around! If I never did a trick on the wave, I would be having a blast.

Backwards…. Here I was super nervous because one of the features I wanted in this boat was for it to “Reel up” backwards bigger than ever before. Initially I was considering increasing the bow rocker, which would have guaranteed that it was slower backwards. However we simply tweaked the rocker profile about 1/3 of the way towards the bow and shortened the bow by .75″ (1.8cm) and the theory was that it would not only reel up better/higher/easier, but be faster backwards too… “YES!!!” It worked! Whew!!! I was running it through the paces, with Emily far away on the shore asking me how it was with hand signals. I was still 2 thumbs up!

Getting air- seriously, I would die if I couldn’t go bigger than before, as that was one of the major goals. I want to get the “huge bonus” on all competitions from now on, and easier than before. The top wave at Rock Island is not beginner friendly for getting air and sticking moves. Beginners love surfing it, and occaisonally spin on it, but doing blunts, etc. takes a great take off, snappy move and clean landing. I started with a lefty blunt and “pop”! I went aerial and made that cool landing sound that a blind person can hear and know you got air when the hull slaps down. I didn’t wait for emily to ask me, I gave her the Thumbs up. Flip turn, back blunt, back pan am, clean blunt, wave monkey (to flush) and I am heading down to the hole….

OK-does it reel up backwards big in a hole??? Entry move (extra surface area on hull makes it hit hard and slows your downstream momentum into the hole, awesome!!!!) . Got in the “Center Stage” hole (yes- finally have a pet name for some of Rock Island’s features- Center Stage and Backstage (Rock Star ) ha…. A little preview when we named Backstage.

I lost my balance and had to brace when first hit the hole. I am still not used to sitting up higher and am throwing my body around too much. Less lean does more when sitting up high. I have to get used to this still. Same lean does more, and you can lean more! Body weight has more effect on throwing the boat around.

Got backwards and stood it up on the bow so high I was almost vertical. I didn’t throw anything out of it, but the potential was there. Oh yea!!! The big moves, like McNasty, Phonix, etc.. Would now be able to go bigger! This will be key at the World Championships, I think.

Headed down to Backstage but it was way too high (3,200 cfs) and it really is too high at 2800 cfs and is ideal (like the level we had the carbon all star in it) at 1500-2000 cfs. Still a good range for a hand made hole.

I did a couple of spins on the little wave and WOW, so loose. One big loop out of the hole (more of a flushy little wave) and I was done. Still didn’t know how it looped yet…

Fast forward to a week in the boat, with Dane, Nick, Stephen, Clay, Emily all padding it too….

Here is the deal….

Length- 5’9″ (1″ shorter than the All-Star)

Volume: 58 gallons (3 Gallons MORE than the All-Star- 2 gallons in the stern, 1 in the bow)

Width- .5″ wider

So is it bigger then? Ha- trick question…. Yes more volume, BUT…

It cartwheels easier!! Easier to get vertical on the bow, and easier to link ends! The stern is “harder” to pull through, but it was SO easy before that the harder makes it still super easy, but allows the bow to go through way easier! I can Super clean cartwheel in flatwater much easier and smoother. Why?

• Because the bow goes down easier (higher seating position and slicier shape counter acts the 1 gallon)
• Because when you are vertical on the stern it holds your body up higher out of the water (2 more gallons) and when you go to push the bow down again you are up high and the bow volume doesn’t have to lift you up- taking much less energy.

Result? SMOOTH cartwheels that are easier! Sweet! Add three gallons for big air, get easier to cartwheel kayak!! Have some cake and eat it too!

Loops- Clearly WAY bigger backloops. Front loops- the biggest looping kayak of All-time the All-Star, would be hard to beat. My first experience in looping it felt exactly like the All-Star. I had some small loops, medium loops, and big loops. Then I started experimenting with how to plug in…

Go flatter in! Then it jumped higher right away and flipped in the air and landed more securely with the extra stern volume. Hard to flush!!! Sweet! Loops bigger forwards too! That extra gallon is where it is, but the bow shape and 1″ shorter was potentially going to work against us. Nope! Just plug in a little flatter… could be because of sitting higher and the body weight being over the bow more when you lean forward.

Got some good time in the main hole. Huge clean back stabs, Awesome Mystery Flips, McNasty, Lunar Orbits (the stern volume is awesome for that!) etc… Sold…. Sold…. And SOLD!

Now Christmas is in two days. Dane and Emily just got their prototype Rock Star S (small) and it looks awesome on them! Emily is more retentive, smoother, and going bigger (she has only paddled it once!) Dane is giddy with the performance (he couldn’t wait so he has paddled the large for a week at only 115 pounds). Check out the video…. This isn’t from a season of best moves. This is from a single trip to the Dries, and two filming sessions at Rock Island, at non-ideal levels at Backstage. We can’t wait to get sweet Backstage levels, and some more big waves surfing too.

Where can you find Rock Stars? You can find them on “Center Stage” first, and then can hang with them “Backstage” before they head home. The production molds for these boats will be ready next month for Medium, and early February for Small, and Large.

What else have we improved?

Finished production weight… 29 pounds for Medium, compared to 31.5 for our medium playboat over the past 2 years.

Cockpit rim is our best ever- BONE DRY!!! Get a great skirt and dry top, or better yet a dry deck and you’ll be paddling bone dry! We also created a new “exit spot” for the backband rope that creates a super smooth adjustment action, and new kiss off shape on the rim that is much stronger.

Each boat will ship with Sweet Cheeks 200 instead of 100, raising you up in the boat more. I paddle this boat with a Sweet Cheeks 200 and a Sweet cheeks 100 in it. This puts me 1.5″ (4.3cm) higher than I paddle in the All-Star. The Knee/thigh areas of the cockpit were designed to be this much higher.

2011 World Championships are 6 months away. Team JK now has a brand new ride for it! The only advice I can think of for competing in this event comes from the “Untouchables” where Sean Connery says…. ” don’t bring a knife to a gunfight!” (paraphrased).

My Summary:

The Rock Star changes the game for playboating once again.. Making anyone go bigger, faster, and do things easier. Playboating just got more fun, once again, and freestyle scores just got bigger, once again!

Emily, Dane, Nick, Clay, Stephen, and EJ are all paddling prototypes of the final design made from a composite mold and super linear plastic. The aluminum mold will arrive soon and we’ll have the production boats then, with the new Rock Star logo on it, and a sweet smooth finish!

The LE4 brings a higher visibility option to the LE series that would make Kobe Bryant proud. We are using a combination of heat transfer and embroidery on the back and the front features a unique font created by Meg. Each LE sports an iconic figure, and this time “bootie guy” raises a toast to his swim.

This jacket is currently in production and we are building only 400 units total. Each jacket is hand crafted at the Astral mothership in Asheville, NC by our talented sewing staff.

Chuck's new Villain was the showcase piece of the Jackson Kayak booth at the Outddor Retailer show at the Salt Palace convention Center last week! Jackson built the boat to show off the new graphic possibilities for 2011. When it was built, EJ and the staff thought it was so cool, that they put it on a stand in the middle of their booth.

When I saw it there, I was psyched! It also has the Alpenglow Logo on the bottom of it. I know that I'm not a good enough boater to show off, but it's good to know that anyone will be able to order the boat of their dreams next year. I'm going paddling on the South fork or Canyon to break it in tomorrow. When you come in, check it out.

On another note, the new Hero Prototype looked really good. Making changes similar to the Funs' and Stars', it is shorter but faster, it will surface on drops quicker, be even easier to roll and be more comfortable.

Jackson Kayak is a great company to partner with. They are still family owned, have great employees, they are putting a ton of time and effort in to R & D, which is really paying off, and most importantly, are striving to make the sport of kayaking better by putting the customer first.

We sailed the new Hobie Tandem Island the other day!

I had my first opportunity to check out the brand new Hobie Tandem Adventure Island last Sunday with My family. The Hobie Tech Rep. Walt had just picked up his demo from the factory in Oceanside California and drove through Boise en-route home. We were the first in the state to try it out! And what great conditions we had. Lake Lowell by the wildlife preserve offered us consistent 12-15 knot winds that made sailing a huge amount of fun!

My first ride was with my daughter Lauren, who had always ridden in the stern of the single Island or on the tramp. You can definitely feel the drag of the extra weight even with a kid on the single; but with the Tandem, the boat glided beautifully. Tacking was easy and when we got broadside to the wind, you really felt the magic that the boat offers. When we went back to shore and picked up my daughter's friend, we were still not dragging even though Lauren rode on the tramp.

It is super easy to use. In fact, I had my daughter do the sailing from the back cockpit. Both cockpit s have full rudder and mainline controls. The boat comes with Turbofins instead of the standard fins so getting off shore is a simple procedure.

I can't waith to get our demo, rental in so I can get it back out!

The boys from Clear H2O productions are at it again. They are on the finishing touches of their latest production, 'Hotel Charley V: 1st Descent'. With 1st. Descents in the deepest canyon in North America, India, and Brazil, look for some crazy paddling.

Alpenglow will be hosting the Boise premier of Hotel Charley V on Saturday, June 12th. Tickets will be on sale starting May 25th at Alpenglow.

Villain review on multi day SF Salmon

Mike gave a great review of the large Villain loaded on a multi-day South Fork Salmon trip in Idaho. Check it out. Paddles great with or without extra gear!

I was able to take the Villain down the SF Salmon for a multi-day trip this last weekend. In my original plans, I was always going to take the Super Hero, my current creek boat. Chuck Cremer called me up and told me that he got the large version in and I should come by and take a look. I stopped byAlpenglow on my way home from work the next day and got very excited about how it looked. I was anxious to try it out on the water, so I called him up and asked if I could take it out that weekend for my multi-day. He was kind enough to say yes.

First let me say that this boat has a ton of room in the back for all my gear. Usually I like to pack my weight all around me and I was actually able to fit a couple more dry bags right behind my seat than I usually can. My float/dry bags that I put into the stern of the boat fit in really easy without any hard pushing. There was plenty of room up front too, but you have to either unscrew the foot pegs or put small enough items in around them. Someone told me that Jackson had put a different type of foot pegs in the Mega Rocker which enables you to flip them up to put items in. I wish they had those in this boat. As much as I wish they had those, it still wasn’t too bad.

When first starting out with this boat, I felt a bit shaky. I was used to the flat hull like the Super Hero has and not a semi-displacement. I was also concerned a bit about how long the nose was. Once I started paddling it down some of the first rapids, the shakiness and the concern for the long nose quickly disappeared. The tracking on this boat is amazing, I would point it where I wanted it to go and it would go there without much need to paddle. It crossed lines with authority and gave me confidence that I had wished that the Super Hero had given me.

This boat was super fast at making moves. There were multiple times where I was above a huge hole and easily made the move around it at the last minute. When I did have to run them, the boat was able to fly through them without much effort. I found that it somewhat auto-boofed across the holes when I wasn’t trying.

On the paddle out on the Main Salmon, I was able to catch quite a few big, green waves. The thing caught waves that I thought for sure that I was going to miss. It was so fast that I found it accelerating down the waves. The boat handles well too. It was easy to surf it from edge to edge and stay on a good wave for a long time.

The other thing I liked about this boat was the secondary stability. I found that I could put it almost completely on its side and not have to brace at all. That helped me too when I was shaky in the beginning, because I didn’t know how to use the boat in then and it helped to keep me upright. Speaking of upright, I didn’t roll the whole trip, so I finally gave it a try down on the Main Salmon. It rolled like my old Huka, which rolls extremely easy.

Overall, this boat impressed me. I am still going to give it another demo on the Upper and Middle of the North Fork Payette to see how it handles up there, but I think it will do better than I could ever expect. I am extremely stoked about this boat and look forward to paddling it again soon.

Tuesday, May 18th. Kayak Demo Day. 5:30 pm until dark, Alpenglow will be at Discovery State park below Lucky Peak Dam hosting a kayak demo day that is flat water oriented. The Demo Day is free, although you must RSVP with Alpenglow in order to reserve a spot as we want to make sure we have enough boats for everyone in attendance. Admission in to Discovery Sate Park is $4/vehicle, or you can ride your bike along the greenbelt for free. Let us know what you want to demo and we will make sure we bring it for you!

Villain Large review-NF Payette

Alpenglow just received the Large Villain from JK a few days ago. Here is the first review from Micah Kneidl, regional team paddler. Sounds awesome!


This last week I got a much anticipated phone call from Alpenglow, our local Jackson kayak superstore informing me that my Villain had arrived. I was very excited and rushed down to the store to pick up my new boat. I chose to order my boat with custom colors blue and yellow, and I must say, it looks SICK!
The following days I had planned on testing the boat on the North Fork of the Payette. As I took my first paddle strokes, I asked myself if I could attain a small section of rapid. A few paddle strokes later, I had completed the attainment. I was now convinced of one thing - the boat is FAST!
I have been paddling the Super Hero and have always liked the security I have in paddling the boat. The Super Hero is stable, it holds a line really well, and it gets along well with eddies. But recently I have been craving some of the characteristics found in more of a creek boat design.
Don't get me wrong - the Villain is a full on creeker. This means that the Villain boofs everything, has a forgiving shape that deals well with the rocks, and recovers well if you find yourself off line. But I was so surprised and pleased with it's ability to hold a line, it's speed, and it's stability (particularly it's secondary stability) - all features that I loved in the Super Hero.
Perhaps what I like most about the Villain is that it truly is a hole punching machine. The bow has a tendency to resurface in a manner that pushes the boat downstream and towards the surface. I found that the Villain would easily bust through any reversal I could send it through. The Villain likes to find itself in a battle against intimidating hydraulics. I look forward to seeing what kind of holes I can send it through as our high water season approaches.
It goes without saying that the Villain is like all Jackson Kayak models so it's very easy to roll, the outfitting is simple and comfortable, and it is dry.
In summary, the Villain met and exceeded all of my expectations. It has the security that I've always loved in the Super Hero, mixed with the forgiveness I like in a creeker, making it a kayak that delivers the best of boat worlds. It's versatility combined with It's speed, stability, and ability to handle large hydraulics make it my new favorite kayak!

Villain S Review by Alec on the NF Payette

Hi Guys,

I just got done demoing the new Villain from Alpenglow on the North Fork of the Payette River yesterday. We ran the middle ten which included Jacobs Ladder. I love this boat!!!!!

The Villain

This Saturday I went down an awesome and classic run-the North Fork of the Payette River. It was an action filled, 10 mile day. With the only creeker I have ever paddled being the Hero; I hopped right on a solid class V run in the Villain. I was sure that I was going to have a hard time going down with such a long boat and a semi-displacement hull. I was SOOO wrong! This boat was, in my opinion, was a slight bit better than the Hero. With this boat I was super comfortable for my first time in it, There were many things I liked about it:

1. By the end of 10 miles, there was barely any water in my boat, which makes it super dry.
2. With the squirrely water that the North Fork possesses, its edges never catch making it very stable.
3. When I was behind somebody I had to back paddle the whole way to not bump into them (going through rapids it was super fast but easy to maneuver).
4. The great thing about my Hero that I loved so much is it would stay on line, but was easy to correct. This did the same.
5. Going fast makes it easy to boof, but this is a boof-o-matic.
6. Ferrying is a dream.
7. In flatwater and rapids, it rolls by itself ( I got flipped in Rock Drop in Jacob’s Ladder, a very dangerous and hard to rapid to roll in, and I set up to roll and next thing I knew I was in the eddy right side up).
8. Going into normally tough eddies is hardly tough at all because it just carves smoothly into eddies.

I can’t wait to get the Villain.

Thanks for a great 2010 Swap!

A big shout out to all of the volunteers for the Alpenglow 2010 used equipment swap. Thanks to all of your help, the swap was up in numbers by about 30% of 2009! Because of that, we raised more money to give to the Idaho River Kids, a non profit org that helps get kids in to kayaking. go to www.idahoriverkids.org to find out how you can participate.

The boat swap day April 17th brought 75 degrees and sun which brought people out early and put them in the mood to shop! At the same time as the swap, Alpenglow was having its new sale. If you could't find used, it could be bought new and on sale!

It's time to get on the water. The first heat wave brought the SF Payette up to 5000cfs. Wow! water has since come back down to a respectable 3000 cfs. Still moderately high. Warm weather will be here again soon!

The Villian is at Alpenglow!

Alpenglow just received it's first shipment of Villians! The good news is that we have a demo. The bad news is that they were all pre-sold by the time they showed up on our door step.

The shape looks great. It is a little longer than the Hero, allowing it to be faster. With a semi planing, semi displacement hull, it has sharp enough edges to carve beautifully, with out getting tripped up. The knee box is following in suit with the 2010 Stars' and Funs', allowing your knees to not be quite as spread out. Very comfy.

Stop by the store and check it out. Demo it. Buy it.

Review of the Prijon Pure on the NF Payette

Read this review that was sent in by Steve. After demoing, he promptly bought the Pure...

Here are my thoughts on the Prijon Pure:

It's nice to see finally Prijon has a modern style creek boat, the Pure. What a thing of beauty, a boat with modern creeking lines, Prijon’s HPT blow-molded plastic, and no pillars for lots of storage on self-support trips!


I got to paddle a Prijon Pure creek boat the other day (3/26) on the NF of the Payette. We ran the Lower 5 miles plus the 3 Jaws rapids (is that a Lower 6.5?) at low water, around ~350 CFS. That’s probably a pretty good test for low water Idaho creeking. The Pure is quick and forgiving with edges that let you slide over rocks and don’t trip you up. It’s easy to boof and made of bomber plastic. Prijon’s plastic also seems to slide over rocks more easily than others, I don’t know why this is but that’s just how it feels. Also cool is the outfitting; the thigh braces are improved over past Prijons I’ve paddled and the foot brace system is solid and works well (in 4 years of paddling a Prijon Hercules with the same style foot brace system I haven’t have any issues with it) – the outfitting is simple and solid. The foot brace is easily removed allowing you to store gear in the bow as well.



If you compare the Pure with other modern creek boats I think you’ll see it has a lot to offer and you get great plastic (don’t take my word for it, do some research) and lots of storage space.

Alpenglow Boat swap

The date for the annual used kayak, raft, and gear swap is set. Saturday, April 17th is the day to bring your used gear to Alpenglow to sell it off or maybe your looking to get a great deal on someone else's boat.

If you want to turn your gear into store credit and buy something new, Alpenglow will keep no commission at all. If you want to cash out your product, then a 15% commission is kept. Either way, it's a great deal.

March Sportsman Show

2010 kicked off for Alpenglow with a fantastic showing at the Idaho Sportman Show at Expo Idaho. We had an awesome looking booth with deals galore to entice fishermen, hunters, kids and families alike. Not only did we sell quite a few kayaks including the ICast show award winning 'Hobie Pro Angler', we got people super excited for the spring season.

Jackson kayak 2010 Super Star

The new 2010 Superstar is a thing of beauty! Most of you who know me can tell that I'm not a play boater. I enjoy surfing and spinning on the horizontal plane. Nonetheless, when I hopped in the new Superstar, the belt felt so loose, that I was able to pull clean 180's and 360's with minimal effort. The boat wasn't grabby. Needless to say, it is super comfy.
